Classic Soft Pretzel Recipe

Now, for the recipe! Here is a classic soft pretzel recipe that is sure to please:

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110-115 degrees Fahrenheit)
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • Coarse salt for sprinkling

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir to dissolve the yeast and let sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy.
  2. Add the flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture and stir until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  3. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add the baking soda. Reduce the heat to a simmer.
  6. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, about 18 inches long, and shape into a pretzel by forming a U shape and crossing the ends over each other, pressing them down onto the bottom of the U to form a knot.
  7. Carefully place the pretzels into the simmering water, a few at a time, and simmer for about 30 seconds on each side. Remove the pretzels from the water using a slotted spoon and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining pretzels.
  8. Brush the pretzels with a beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the pretzels are golden brown.
  9. Remove from the oven and let the pretzels cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Enjoy your homemade soft pretzels warm, with a side of mustard or cheese sauce for dipping. They are also delicious served cold as a snack or packed in a lunchbox.
