5 Things To Do Before You Give Birth

Birth is a scary thing especially if its your first time. Here is 5 things you can do before giving birth to ease and calm the process.

5 Things to do Before Giving Birth

  1. Look into the hospital that you want to give birth at. You are able to call and schedule a interview with the birthing staff and hospital. Things to look for would be if they are understaffed, if you can get your own birthing room instead of sharing, if your spouse is provided a couch to sleep on ( it’s like a futon), and how many people may attend the birth itself.
  2. Schedule a reservation with the hospital you plan to birth at. This will save so much time on paperwork and medical history. You will be able to fill out forms before even being in labor and can set up request before hand so hospital staff knows what you would like. This would be such things as a personal room, letting them know you want to breastfeed exclusively, and people that you do not want to visit or your own visiting times.
  3. Pack your birthing bag before you will be in labor. This will save on time, things you may forget, and also allows you to pick and choose on what you, baby, and spouse will be wearing when leaving. The most important thing is to have a bag big enough for everything you plan to take. I plan to pack mine at 36 weeks. This is my first pregnancy so im not sure if ill go into labor early, or after 40 weeks.
  4. Have a detailed birthing plan. If you go to the hospital not knowing what you want for yourself you will be persuaded by the staff to try everything. You can do thing or you can look into things that will be more beneficial for you and baby. Some of these things include not giving the baby a bath right after birth. Instead allow for a “golden hour” where right after birth you and baby will bong for an hour. This is skin to skin contact. During this, take time to rub in the vermix that covers your baby after birth. Another thing that is beneficial for baby is to delay cord clamping. Waiting until the umbilical cord stops pulsing to cut it allows for the baby to get everything from the placenta along with more blood.
  5. At home prep before you leave for the hospital. This would include fresh clean sheets and blanket on bed, a plan for who will feed the animals, and meal prepping if possible. When you get home from the hospital you will not want to have to clean the house, make a meal, wash clothes, or change the bedding. Do all of this before hand so you can come straight home and relax with your newborn. This will allow for minimal time away from your baby and more time being able to rest and bond.

To some people all of this might be obvious things to do. It wasn’t until I read the book “What to expect the first years” (<affiliate link) that I realized how much all of this stuff makes a huge difference with just a day of scheduled planning.
